Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has instructed all collectors and buyers of commercial chicken eggs to stop transacting below the Purchase Reference Price (HAP) of Rp 26,500 per kilogram. He is urging the National Police’s Food Task Force to oversee the implementation of the reference price. The policy was adopted after egg prices in several production centres fell far below the HAP. The situation has left farmers facing pressure from weakening selling prices amid persistently high operating costs. “We have taken several policies to protect them, ensuring they do not suffer losses. First, we request all egg collectors and buyers adhere to the HAP. The HAP price is Rp 26,500 per kilogram,” Amran stated at the Ministry of Agriculture’s headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (9/6/2026). The Minister will send an advisory letter to farmers, copied to the Food Task Force, to monitor the implementation of the HAP on the ground. The oversight is intended to prevent the practice of buying eggs below the reference price, which harms farmers. Amran is also coordinating with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to increase egg uptake through the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. According to him, this measure could help accelerate price recovery at the farm level. “Yes, three times a week, that will quickly accelerate it,” said Amran. Chairman of the Presidium of the National Layer Farmers Association (PPN), Yudianto Yosgiarso, welcomed the government’s move. He assessed that the Minister’s decision would help sustain the businesses of layer farmers who have been grappling with price fluctuations. According to Yudianto, the collapse in egg prices was triggered by an oversupply condition in several production centre regions. Egg prices in East Java had dropped to Rp 21,500 per kilogram, in Central Java to around Rp 22,500 per kilogram, while in West Java and Jakarta they ranged between Rp 22,500 and Rp 23,000 per kilogram. “Starting today, there will be no more egg purchases below the HAP, which is Rp 26,500 per kilogram,” he said. The situation is further burdening farmers because feed costs remain high. The depreciation of the rupiah against the US dollar has also contributed to rising production costs. “What is clear is that this is happening because of oversupply. There is clearly an oversupply of eggs,” said Yudianto. Sidenreng Rappang Regent Syaharuddin Alrif said the local government routinely brings together farmers and traders twice a week to agree on egg prices. The agreement is then published and serves as one of the benchmarks for egg trading in the Eastern Indonesia region.
