Ampera Bridge designated as national cultural heritage

Palembang (ANTARA) - The Ampera Bridge in Palembang, South Sumatra, has been designated as a national cultural heritage site by the central government due to its high historical and cultural value.

Speaking in Palembang on Friday, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that the status of Ampera Bridge as national cultural heritage provides the central government with the flexibility to undertake interventions and revitalisation projects. According to him, the Ambar Bridge met the requirements for this designation as it has stood for more than 50 years and remains an inseparable part of the local community’s daily activities.

“The designation was carried out through a process of study, research, and recommendations from the National Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACBN),” he said. He added that cultural heritage status is necessary to ensure that historical assets are clearly inventoried so they can be protected, developed, and utilised without losing their historical essence. “The Ministry of Culture will certainly undertake interventions such as revitalisation so that the Ampera Bridge can be developed and utilised without losing its historical value,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, expressed that the Ampera Bridge was designated as national cultural heritage because it holds many assets and historical values from various historic buildings and infrastructure. According to Dewa, this designation can strengthen the protection of the nation’s historical, architectural, scientific, and socio-cultural heritage. “In the future, towers 1 and 2 will be managed for tourism, allowing visitors to ascend and descend the structures,” he said.
