GENEVA (AFP): Arbitrary executions and arrests, torture and
poor treatment have continued in Indonesia, Amnesty International
alleged, while adding that governmental reforms are moving too
slowly.
When the United Nations Human Rights Commission begins its
annual session on Monday in Geneva, Amnesty has pledged to
highlight alleged human rights abuses in Indonesia.
Amnesty said the abuses are worst in Aceh and Irian Jaya,
where separatist movements have caused violence.
Amnesty will ask the Commission to send investigators to look
into torture and extrajudiciary executions in the two provinces.
The human rights organization is also lobbying the Commission
to establish an international penal court to judge those accused
of human rights abuses in East Timor both before and after the
August 1999 ballot.
