Amnesty granted to communists

MANILA (AFP): The government yesterday granted amnesty to 112
dissidents, including communist guerrillas and right-wing
military and police rebels in the southern Philippines, the
official Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.

The group includes eight army officers who mutinied in the
southern city of Cagayan de Oro in 1990 and 78 former members of
the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed group, the
New People's Army, PNA said, quoting Alvin Calingin, the Cagayan
de Oro chairman of the local amnesty board.

PNA did not identify the other 26 who received amnesty.

Calingin said the grant means these people are now free from
"criminal liability for past offenses."
