Amnesty for GAM members

Amnesty for GAM members

From Suara Karya

Many people, including Vice President Hamzah Haz, have proposed that members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) who have surrendered and returned to the fold of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia should be given amnesty on Aug. 17, 2003, the day that marks the 58th anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

The government may set Aug 17, 2003, as the deadline for GAM members to give themselves up to the Indonesian authorities. However, after this deadline, captured GAM members must be processed according to the prevailing legislation and the door to amnesty should be closed to them, forever.
