AMMAN Engages Thousands of Students in School Waste Management
School-based waste management is an approach being developed by PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN) to strengthen environmental education in West Sumbawa Regency. Through the School Waste Management Programme (PPSS), thousands of students are involved in managing organic waste, which is processed into valuable compost while promoting the application of a circular economy.
The programme combines environmental education, infrastructure provision, and circular economy practices within the school environment. Teachers integrate waste management materials into lessons, whilst students practise sorting and processing waste using the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R), enabling schools to develop into environmental learning centres that also involve families and the community.
In its implementation, students and teachers process organic waste in a ‘Rumah Kompos’ (Compost House) to produce POSTA, or ‘Our School’s Organic Fertiliser’. The compost is used for school needs, the community, the agricultural sector, and reclamation activities in AMMAN’s operational areas.
Vice President of Policy & Permitting and Social Impact at AMMAN, Priyo Pramono, stated that through PPSS, the company aims to strengthen the role of schools as centres of knowledge transformation whilst encouraging changes in community behaviour towards waste management. ‘With this programme, AMMAN is helping to build an ecosystem that develops a future generation of young people who are responsible towards the environment. The success of PPSS is not only seen from the amount of waste managed, but from the growing awareness that waste has value if managed properly. When that understanding grows among students, teachers, and families, the impact extends from schools to the community,’ Priyo said in a statement on Tuesday.
Since its inception in 2022, PPSS has grown from two pilot schools to six active schools, involving thousands of students, teachers, parents, community members, and dozens of AMMAN employee volunteers. Over the period from 2022 to 2025, the programme successfully managed more than 150 tonnes of organic waste and produced over 50 tonnes of POSTA compost. PPSS also helped avoid around 11 tonnes of emissions in 2025 and recorded a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 4.09, meaning every Rp1 invested generates Rp4.09 in social, economic, and environmental value.
AMMAN noted that this school-based waste management model has begun to be independently replicated by several schools outside the programme without company funding support. Several partner schools have also won Adiwiyata awards at the provincial and national levels in recognition of their implementation of environmental management in schools. For its implementation of PPSS, AMMAN received the Waste Management category award at the Lestari Awards 2026. The award was given for a waste management approach that integrates environmental education with a circular economy and is considered capable of creating sustainable social, economic, and environmental impact.
