AMMAN Copper Smelter Project Completed in West Sumbawa
The construction of a smelter plant in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has been completed. The project’s completion was formalised through the signing of a Completion and Project Acceptance Certificate (PAC) between AMMAN and its strategic partner, China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (NFC), at NFC’s headquarters in Beijing, China, on 18 July 2026. The PAC signing marks the conclusion of all construction work and the resolution of punch list items related to commissioning within the contract’s scope. Although the AMMAN copper smelter has been operating for over a year, this achievement confirms that the smelter has successfully met all performance guarantee tests as required by the contract and officially enters the long-term operation phase. AMMAN President Director Arief Sidarto stated that the project’s completion is the result of dedication and collaboration among various parties to realise one of the world’s most advanced integrated copper smelting and precious metal refining complexes. “The completion of this smelter project is a significant achievement for AMMAN. The smelter’s operation underscores our commitment to supporting the national downstreaming agenda,” Arief said. He expressed hope that the policy ecosystem supporting the competitiveness of the domestic processing and mining industry would continue to be strengthened, enabling Indonesia to maximise the benefits of downstreaming and remain competitive amid global dynamics. NFC Chairman Liu Yu noted that the successful completion of the AMMAN smelter project reflects strong international collaboration in supporting large-scale, high-value-added mineral processing industries. Designated as a National Strategic Project, the smelter is designed to process up to 900,000 metric tonnes of concentrate per year from the Batu Hijau mine and, in the future, the Elang mine. The integrated complex will produce high-quality copper cathodes, gold, silver, sulphuric acid, and selenium, which are essential materials for various sectors underpinning economic growth and the global energy transition. From renewable energy and electric mobility to digital technology and high-tech manufacturing, these products will help meet the world’s increasing demand for critical minerals. Incorporating state-of-the-art processing technology and world-class environmental management systems, the facility is designed to achieve optimal metal recovery rates, higher energy efficiency, strong operational reliability, and sustainable, responsible resource management.
