AMKEI Calls for Peace, Entrusts Police with Investigation into Matraman Clash

The General Chairman of the Central Executive Board of Angkatan Muda Kei Indonesia (DPP AMKEI), John Kei, has asked the police to thoroughly investigate the deadly clash that occurred in Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta. John Kei also called on all parties to preserve the peace.

This was conveyed by the Daily Chairman of DPP AMKEI, Abubakar Refra, during a visit to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police on Thursday (30/7/2026). DPP AMKEI called on all Eastern Indonesian communities to exercise restraint.

“We have instructed all administrators, members, and the extended AMKEI family, and we appeal to all Eastern Indonesian communities to exercise restraint, maintain public order, and not take the law into their own hands,” Abubakar told reporters.

DPP AMKEI, he said, is committed to maintaining order and preventing further conflict. They have entrusted the handling of the case entirely to police investigators.

“AMKEI Indonesia is ready to cooperate should any involvement of members or parties connected to the organisation be found during the legal process,” he said.

AMKEI hopes the entire investigation will be carried out professionally and transparently. AMKEI has also asked the police to investigate other parties suspected of spreading hatred and discrimination against Eastern Indonesian communities.

“We appeal to the public not to spread unverified information, provocation, hate speech, or content that could trigger conflict between groups,” he said.

“The General Chairman of DPP AMKEI Indonesia, John Kei, affirms that AMKEI Indonesia is committed to safeguarding unity, peace, national stability, and the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia,” he added.

The Incident

The unrest began at a nasi uduk vendor’s stall and then spread to Jalan Tambak, Menteng, leaving one person dead. One person died in hospital following the clash.

The Head of Public Relations at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said the first incident involved vandalism. It began when a group refused to be reprimanded by residents over the use of a noisy exhaust pipe.

“This incident started with the noise of an exhaust pipe. The noise disturbed other residents, and someone shouted at them. Those involved took offence and returned to the location, but the person who shouted was no longer there,” Budi said on Jalan Matraman Dalam on Monday (27/7).

Police have named seven suspects in the deadly unrest in the Jalan Tambak area of Menteng. The seven suspects were charged over the vandalism of street vendors’ carts and assault during the clash.

“Four suspects have been charged over the vandalism of residents’ carts. This is based on statements from eight witnesses, including CCTV footage and other pieces of evidence,” Budi said.

The four vandalism suspects have the initials GNA, AJL, FAM, and ELL. In addition, police have named three other suspects in the beating that left one person dead.

“For the vandalism case, the initials are GNA, AJL, FAM, and ELL. For the beating case, there are three: SK, AS, and OR,” he said.
