Amien Rais to accompany Li Peng

SURABAYA, East Java: Chairman of the People's Consultative
Assembly (MPR) Amien Rais is scheduled to accompany his Chinese
counterpart, Li Peng, on a visit to Surabaya on Sept. 11 and
Sept. 12.

East Java Vice Governor Imam Supardi announced it after a
meeting with People's Republic of China Ambassador to Indonesia
Lu Shumin here on Monday.

During the visit, Li Peng, in his capacity as the Chinese
Parliamentary Speaker, is also slated to visit Maspion, PT PAL
(shipbuilder), PT Petrokimia (Petrochemical industry), the
Airlangga University, Tanggulangin industrial complex and
Surabaya city council.

"Li Peng's visit will be quite short, as on Sept. 12 he has to
leave for Manila, the Philippines," he added.

"Li Peng decided to visit Surabaya in a bid to strengthen
business relations between the two countries," he said.

Lu Shumin also said that it was Li Peng who presided over the
official opening of the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta in 1990 and
his visit to Surabaya was his specific request. --Antara
