Amid US Attacks, Iran Asserts War Will End Through Victory or Negotiation
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has affirmed that the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States has only two possible outcomes: a decisive military victory or diplomatic negotiation. However, he stressed that negotiations would only take place once Tehran had secured a strong bargaining position on the battlefield.
In a statement to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, Araghchi said that military success is a crucial prerequisite before entering negotiations to end the confrontation.
“The end of the war is possible through an absolute military victory or through negotiation. The right time to negotiate is when you have achieved reliable battlefield and strategic success in the military sphere,” Araghchi said, as quoted by Al Jazeera on Monday (20 July).
Araghchi emphasised that any policy relating to the escalation of the war must not be taken rashly. According to him, the safety of the people and the future of the nation’s sovereignty are the top priorities in every strategic decision.
“You cannot gamble with people’s lives and the fate of an entire nation. Decisions must be made based on accurate and complete calculations,” he asserted.
He also urged political leaders to continue carrying out in-depth evaluations of the impact of continuing the war. Such evaluations include assessing whether further fighting would deliver strategic advantages or instead worsen losses, both from a humanitarian perspective and in terms of long-term national interests.
Whilst not denying that Iran has suffered a number of losses during the armed conflict, Araghchi claimed that his country had succeeded in proving itself as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
“Despite some losses, we have emerged as a decisive international player in this war and demonstrated the strength of the system,” he added.
These firm statements come amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington since early July. The escalation was triggered by attacks on several commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which were blamed on Iran.
In response, the United States launched retaliatory military operations targeting sites along Iran’s coastal areas. Local Iranian media reported a series of explosions in several strategic cities, including Sirik, Jask, Tabriz and Chabahar.
The situation grew more critical after the US military confirmed the death of an additional soldier in the latest wave of attacks, bringing the number of American personnel killed to three in recent days.
