Amid Public Rejection of PSEL Projects, Environment Minister to Meet with Danantara Today
Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat plans to hold a meeting with Danantara today to address the rejection of Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) projects by residents in several Indonesian regions. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon (10/6/2026). “This afternoon I am meeting with Danantara to discuss, among other things, several matters that need to be mitigated,” Jumhur said while inspecting the PSEL project site with Bali Governor Wayan Koster in Denpasar on Wednesday morning. This responds to public opposition to the construction of PSEL facilities in Makassar, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar. Nonetheless, Jumhur confirmed that the PSEL development in Denpasar will proceed and is estimated to be operational by September 2027. “It looks like a factory. So if you have seen a factory in Jakarta, it is roughly like that. There will be a large building, there will be a turbine later, there will be combustion, there will be an area for trucks to enter,” he explained. For context, the central government’s decision to continue the planned construction of the PSEL project, also known as a Waste Power Plant, in Tamalanrea District, Makassar, has drawn rejection from local residents. They are disappointed and are urging the government to transparently disclose the Environmental Impact Analysis study for the project.
