Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will impose regulations on the operating hours of padel courts located in densely populated areas.

The decisive step by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government follows a surge in complaints from local residents who feel disturbed by the noise generated by the sport during nighttime hours.

“In densely populated areas, we will regulate the hours of use,” Pramono said at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday (23/2).

Pramono noted that whilst padel has become a favourite sport among many Jakarta residents, court operators and players must still prioritise tolerance towards the peace and quiet of surrounding communities, particularly vulnerable groups.

“There are even cases where someone’s one-and-a-half-year-old baby cannot sleep because people are still screaming whilst playing padel late at night. In my view, that is simply not fair,” Pramono said.

Pramono confirmed that he has received a string of objection reports from communities in several areas, ranging from the Haji Nawi and Cilandak districts to Rawamangun.

In response to these complaints, Pramono assured that City Hall will promptly convene a dedicated meeting to evaluate permits and regulations pertaining to padel courts.

“Tomorrow, City Hall will specifically hold a meeting about padel. I have already instructed those responsible for issuing permits to prepare and coordinate regarding padel facilities,” Pramono said.

Pramono emphasised that he fundamentally supports the sporting trend that has become a favourite among residents of the capital.

However, he urged that such enthusiasm be accompanied by a spirit of tolerance towards surrounding communities.

According to him, the operating hour restrictions will not be applied uniformly. Padel courts situated in commercial zones or dedicated sports facilities will be permitted to operate without strict time limitations.

Conversely, for courts adjacent to residential areas, the regulation of playing hours becomes an absolute obligation of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to ensure the comfort and tranquillity of residents.

“If a padel court is located at a commercial venue or facility, in my view there is no issue with playing until any hour. However, if it is in a densely populated area and disturbs residents, the players themselves would not be comfortable either. Therefore, it is the obligation of the DKI Jakarta Government to regulate this — the hours of use,” Pramono said.
