Amid Demands and Expectations: Workers' Plan to Celebrate May Day 2026 with Prabowo Again
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Several labour groups from various workers’ union confederations plan to celebrate International Labour Day (May Day) 2026 again with President Prabowo Subianto at the National Monument (Monas) area in Jakarta on Friday (1/5/2026).
The commemoration is estimated to be attended by hundreds of thousands of workers from various regions in Indonesia.
The celebration of May Day 2026, which will be held again with President Prabowo, was first revealed by the President of the All-Indonesian Workers’ Union Confederation (KSPSI), Andi Gani Nena Wea.
President Prabowo is scheduled to attend and deliver a speech at 08:30 WIB.
“President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend,” said Andi Gani in his statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
Recently, masses of workers from another group, namely the Indonesian Workers’ Union Confederation (KSPI), also announced that they will join in celebrating May Day at Monas.
KSPI President and Labour Party President, Said Iqbal, said that initially, the May Day celebration was planned to take place in front of the DPR Building and continue to the Indonesia Arena area.
However, that plan was changed after a meeting with President Prabowo.
“Of course, there is a reason why KSPI moved the May Day plan for 1 May 2026, which was supposed to be in front of the DPR RI Building and continued to the Indonesia Arena area, to Monas in Jakarta,” said Said during an online press conference on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
He revealed that the meeting with the President took place on Tuesday (28/4/2026) for approximately one and a half hours.
In that meeting, KSPI along with the Labour Party discussed labour issues as well as the direction of Indonesia’s future.
“From the discussion that lasted almost one and a half hours, KSPI, supported by the Labour Party, decided to hold the May Day celebration together with Mr President Prabowo Subianto and other labour union friends at Monas,” said Said.
According to him, previously KSPI had submitted a request to meet the President before 1 May to convey workers’ aspirations, which was then granted by the government.
