Cuba is reported to have acquired more than 300 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or military drones and has recently begun discussing plans to use them to attack United States (US) bases in Guantanamo Bay, US military vessels, and potentially even the territory of Florida. Quoting an Axios report on Monday (18/05/2026), this classified intelligence leak emerges amidst escalating tensions between Washington and Havana.

The geopolitical situation between the two nations is at a critical juncture as speculation grows that the US is considering military action against the island ruled by the communist administration. The US government, under the leadership of Donald Trump, has expressed deep concern regarding the rapid development of drone warfare tactics and the presence of Iranian military advisers in Havana.

“When we think about the types of technology that are so close, and various malicious actors ranging from terrorist groups, drug cartels, to Iranian and Russian citizens, it is very worrying. This is an evolving threat,” said an unnamed senior US official, as quoted by Axios.

Several US officials told Axios that Cuba has been actively acquiring attack drones from Russia and Iran since 2023 and is currently working to purchase even more of this aerial fleet. Responding to these serious allegations from the US intelligence ecosystem, the Cuban government immediately issued a harsh condemnation, accusing Washington of deliberately fabricating reasons for conflict.

“Without any legitimate reason, the US government, day by day, is building a false case to justify a cruel economic war against the Cuban people and potential military aggression,” wrote Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on the X platform. Rodriguez also emphasised that his country has no intention of initiating armed confrontation, but will not remain silent if its sovereignty is disturbed by foreign powers.

“Cuba does not threaten or desire war. Cuba defends peace and prepares itself to face external aggression in exercising its legitimate right to self-defence as recognised by the UN Charter,” Rodriguez added.

Intelligence reports regarding these hundreds of drones surfaced only days after CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a sudden visit to Havana, where the Cuban people are currently enduring hardships due to continuous power outages triggered by President Trump’s fuel blockade. During the visit, Ratcliffe reportedly issued a very stern warning to high-ranking officials in Havana against engaging in any hostile actions.

“Director Ratcliffe emphasised that Cuba can no longer function as a platform for enemies to advance hostile agendas in our hemisphere,” said an unnamed CIA official, as quoted by Axios.

Diplomatic relations between the communist island and the US have been stuck in a long-standing stalemate since the 1960s, with the US state of Florida being home to a large and politically influential Cuban exile community. Earlier this month, Trump even made a controversial statement that the US would take over the Caribbean island, located just 90 miles from Florida, almost instantaneously. The American billionaire also suggested that following US military operations to overthrow Venezuela’s veteran leader Nicolas Maduro, Cuba would be the next target of military operations.

US media is also reporting that law enforcement authorities in Washington are working towards bringing legal charges against Raul Castro, the 94-year-old brother of the late legendary Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
