American citizen in Batam attacked after altercation with online taxi driver

An American citizen identified as DJ became a victim of mob assault in Batam, Riau Islands. The attack occurred following a dispute with an online taxi driver.

According to a report on Saturday (28 February 2026), Iptu Brata Ul Usna, head of criminal investigation at Batu Ampar Police Station, stated that the incident took place on Wednesday (25 February) at approximately 02:40 WIB outside Café One Spot & Lounge, Wiramustika Complex, Sei Jodoh, Batu Ampar, Batam.

“The suspect, identified as AA (24), has been taken into custody on Thursday (26 February) in a boarding house area in Kampung Pelita, Lubuk Baja,” Brata told reporters on Friday (27 February).

The incident began when the victim and a companion ordered an online taxi service. However, through the application’s phone connection, the driver allegedly hurled abusive language at the victim.

“The situation escalated when the driver arrived at the location. The driver allegedly got out of the vehicle in an emotional state and attempted to attack the victim,” he explained.

The victim’s companion at the location attempted to break up the altercation. However, moments later, an associate of the suspect arrived and joined in attacking the victim.

“As a result of the incident, the American citizen DJ sustained bruising on both hands and elbows. Meanwhile, the victim’s companion who attempted to intervene suffered facial swelling, a torn lip, and injuries to his hands and feet,” he stated.
