Ambon must revive spirit of unity

Ambon is widely known as a placid land with beautiful scenery and friendly people who used to live in perfect harmony with one another. It is hard to believe that in such a peaceful place an extremely tragic human drama occurred at the time when Muslims were celebrating Idul Fitri.

It could be said that the unexpected conflict occurred because of the existing gap between the Ambonese and the migrants who have lived for generations in Ambon (mostly from Sulawesi, Java and Sumatra).

Nevertheless, in general, the conflict occurred because of differences of religion. The violence has caused great losses in terms of lives, houses and facilities. It also has caused damage to Ambon's beautiful natural setting.

However, the Ambon tragedy is a blessing in disguise. Through this tragedy, people are more aware of their imperfections in executing religious teachings. The tragedy has given us the chance to show our concern by performing social acts to help our brothers and sisters.

The bitter reality in Ambon is a valuable lesson which can help all of us understand our social situation and environment. Pela gandong is a local expression indicating that Ambon is a beautiful town where people live in a friendly atmosphere in the spirit of unity. Can such a lovely environment be revived? Can the ruins of Ambon be rebuilt? Will the Ambonese still share their golden resources? Will people still be able to safely visit Ambon?

Let us work together to restore the peaceful situation Ambon used to offer society. It is true that the religious conflict has made peace in Ambon difficult. However, this doesn't mean that the difficulty cannot be overcome, so that Ambon may revive the spirit of brotherhood, unity and integrity.
