Ambassador: Kyrgyzstan to propose new solutions for global conflicts at the UN Security Council
UN/New York (ANTARA) - Kyrgyzstan, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, will strive to offer innovative solutions to conflicts around the world, including in Ukraine, said Edil Baisalov, the republic’s new ambassador to Washington, on Wednesday.
Earlier that day, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported that Kyrgyzstan was elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term for the first time.
Austria, Portugal, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago were also elected.
“We are aware of all the crises that are happening now. We have our own views,” Baisalov told reporters when asked how Kyrgyzstan would address global conflicts such as in Iran, Ukraine, and the Gaza Strip.
“Clearly, we will consult with many of the members who supported our election. We are aware of the procedures of the Security Council, and we will be a voice that will try to bring some innovative solutions,” he added.
Old solutions from old powers have been proposed repeatedly for new problems, he said.
That is why it is important for countries like Kyrgyzstan, which have not previously been members of the UN Security Council, to be invited to the decision-making table, he continued.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members: five permanent members (Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States) with veto power, and 10 non-permanent members, elected on a regional basis.
The newly elected countries will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia on the council.
Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia will retain their seats as non-permanent members of the Security Council for the time being.
