Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakramorty, has stated that the priority agenda for BRICS 2026 is aligned with the focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and India.

“Specifically, we see an increasingly strong alignment between BRICS priorities and our bilateral agenda (India and Indonesia),” Chakravorty said in a written interview with ANTARA regarding the agenda for India’s BRICS Presidency in Jakarta, Friday.

India’s BRICS Presidency this year carries four main pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.

The resilience pillar focuses on the health sector, agriculture, food security, energy, disaster risk reduction, and supply chains, while the innovation pillar addresses the development of startups, MSMEs, science and technology, research and development, digital public infrastructure, and artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, the cooperation pillar promotes multilateralism, global governance reform, and practical cooperation in development; and the sustainability pillar prioritises the implementation of clean and renewable energy, climate action, as well as sustainable adaptation and consumption.

“We see very great potential (for the expansion of bilateral cooperation between India and Indonesia) in the development of digital public infrastructure, the green transition and renewable energy, and of course, projects in the social sector,” Ambassador Chakravorty noted.

Chakravorty revealed that the increasing harmonisation between the multilateral agenda within BRICS and the focus on bilateral cooperation between member states is one of the primary objectives of India’s Presidency this year.

He stated that, in addition to consolidating the achievements of previous presidencies and facilitating the integration of new members into the forum, India aims to transform the 2026 BRICS priority agenda into practical, result-oriented, and sustainable cooperation.

BRICS is an international organisation focused on strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, development, finance, and global issues.

The organisation originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Currently, BRICS membership has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.

Indonesia joined BRICS as a member on 6 January 2025.

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, on 12-13 September 2026. This year, the international cooperation forum carries the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
