Amazon is intensifying its presence in Southeast Asia through significant investments in cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI). In the past three years, the US-based tech firm has announced strategic investments in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a projected total exceeding $33 billion by 2039. The investments are expected not only to accelerate regional digital transformation but also deliver significant economic impact. According to Amazon’s economic impact assessment, the realised investments are projected to contribute over $64 billion to the combined GDP of the four countries and support more than 56,300 full-time equivalent jobs annually in the local data centre supply chain sector. This move aligns with the rapid growth of the ASEAN digital economy, projected to reach $560 billion by 2030. Through cloud and AI infrastructure expansion, Amazon aims to ensure businesses, startups, and public organisations across Southeast Asia have access to technologies that drive innovation and global competitiveness. Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, stated that Southeast Asia is a key region for the company’s future technology development. ‘Amazon plans to invest over $33 billion across Southeast Asia by 2039. We are building infrastructure, training local talent, and empowering businesses in the region to compete globally,’ Zapolsky said, quoted on Sunday (24 May 2026). Zapolsky also praised the role of Southeast Asian governments for successfully creating an investment climate conducive to AI and cloud technology development. ‘Southeast Asian governments deserve recognition for their bold leadership in policy-making and creating an economic climate that drives growth and attracts unprecedented global investment in AI and technology,’ he added. Amazon’s journey in Southeast Asia began in 2010 with the launch of its first AWS Region in Singapore. Since then, expansion has continued to include Indonesia in 2021, Malaysia in 2024, and Thailand in 2025. Amazon now employs over 3,000 staff and around 2,500 supporting workers in the region. By 2025, Amazon had invested over $3 billion in Southeast Asia across its various business lines, including AWS, Stores, Devices, and Entertainment. These investments form a crucial foundation for developing AI-driven solutions across multiple sectors. Several Southeast Asian companies and institutions have utilised AWS technology to accelerate their digital transformation. Malaysian company 123RF, for instance, uses Amazon’s AI services to analyse millions of visual contents, doubling search accuracy and cutting search time by 90%. In the Philippines, Union Bank of the Philippines uses AWS-based generative AI to deliver business analytics three to five times faster. Meanwhile, Thai property company Sansiri has built an AI assistant that responds to homebuyer queries 30% faster and processes 50,000 invoices monthly with 90% accuracy. In Singapore, GovTech Singapore developed MAESTRO, an AI platform that helps government agencies build generative AI solutions more cost-effectively. Within nine months of its launch, the platform has been used by 20 public sector organisations and over 300 data scientists and machine learning engineers.
