Amazon Cuts Jobs Again, Affecting Fewer Than 1,000 Roles in Three Countries
Amazon.com Inc. has again cut jobs across several business units. This time, fewer than 1,000 roles are reportedly affected in the United States, India and the United Kingdom. The cuts target a range of teams, from customer service and marketplace support to technology engineering in the company’s retail business.
According to a Business Insider report on Monday (12 October 2026), several Amazon employees said they had received emails informing them that their roles had been eliminated. Messages shared on an internal Slack channel with nearly 37,000 members also indicated that the cuts covered various operational functions.
Affected employees have also raised questions about severance terms, access to internal job vacancies and the possibility of further redundancy notices. This has added to uncertainty among workers affected by the restructuring.
Amazon said it was eliminating a small number of roles, mainly in its Stores business. The move is part of a restructuring intended to speed up work and support the company’s priorities. The company also said it would assist affected employees during the transition.
The latest cuts add to a series of workforce reductions Amazon has made in recent years. In January 2026, the company confirmed that it was eliminating about 16,000 roles across the organisation. In a message to employees, it said the changes were intended to reduce organisational layers, increase individual responsibility and remove bureaucracy.
Amazon had previously announced 14,000 corporate job cuts in October 2025. This brought the total planned reductions to about 30,000 roles, equivalent to around 1 per cent of the company’s total workforce of 1.56 million.
Previous cuts affected several business units, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video, and People Experience and Technology. The latest reductions, focused mainly on the Stores business, show that organisational restructuring is continuing across the company.
Separately, Amazon was reported last month to be seeking former employees, including some who had previously been laid off, for roles in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
Amazon’s AI agent organisation, led by AWS vice-president Swami Sivasubramanian, reportedly launched an initiative called the “Swami’s Boomerang Reengagement Initiative”. The programme aims to reconnect with former employees who have expertise in AI and machine learning.
