Alwi to attend Yemeni National Day

INDONESIA: Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Alwi Shihab will attend celebrations to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Yemen's unification, Yemeni Ambassador to Indonesia said in Jakarta.

"Minister Alwi Shihab left Jakarta on Friday for Yemen. He will attend the 15th anniversary of our Unification Day celebrations in Al-Mukalla, the capital of Hudramout, on Sunday," Ambassador Ahmed Salem Saleh Al-Wahishi told The Jakarta Post on Friday via telephone.

On May 22, 1990, the present Republic of Yemen was established through the unification of North and South Yemen. Since then Yemen has commemorated Unification Day every May 22.

Ahmed said his government had decided to hold Unification Day celebrations in Al-Mukalla instead of capital Sanaa this year.

During his three-day stay in Yemen, Alwi will meet Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Saleh and Prime Minister Abd al-Qadir Ba Jamal as well as hold bilateral talks with his counterpart in Sanaa. -- JP
