Alumni family of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta calls for peace efforts in the Middle East
Jakarta — The alumni family of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta for the Special Region of Jakarta (KAUMY DK Jakarta) has called for the importance of peace efforts in the Middle East, given that tensions not only risk triggering a humanitarian crisis but also impact global economic stability.
“Peace must always be the primary choice. Efforts to defuse conflict through dialogue and humanitarian approaches are important steps to prevent greater suffering for civilians,” said Wahyu Sandya Yudha Pangestu, Chairman of KAUMY DK Jakarta, in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to Pangestu, the escalation of conflicts involving several countries in the Middle East region, including tensions related to Iran and the protracted conflict in Palestine, risks creating widespread impacts, both in humanitarian and global economic terms.
He assessed that instability in the region could affect various strategic global sectors, ranging from trade to energy, which ultimately could impact the economies of many countries, including Indonesia.
The call for peace also aligns with the humanitarian values that Muhammadiyah has consistently championed in responding to various global issues.
Previously, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) urged the United Nations (UN) to immediately take on a role amid the escalation of the Middle East conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The call was conveyed by DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani in her speech at the Plenary Session of the DPR RI Opening of the Fourth Session of the 2025–2026 Parliamentary Term at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
“The DPR RI urges the UN to take on a role and act immediately in upholding respect for international law, protecting civilians, and maintaining shared commitment to preserving peace and global stability,” said Puan.
Furthermore, the DPR RI also affirmed that the Indonesian government must continue to implement a free and active foreign policy in safeguarding national interests wisely, consistently, and constructively in responding to global geopolitical dynamics.
