Alternative Tobacco Products Gain Popularity, One Reason Being Minimal Smoke Odour

Alternative tobacco products have become increasingly popular among some adult smokers in recent years. The emergence of new technology offering a different experience compared to conventional cigarettes is one factor driving the shift in consumer preferences. One of the most highlighted reasons is the minimal smoke odour produced. Unlike conventional cigarettes that burn tobacco, generating smoke and aroma that can cling to clothing and the surrounding environment, heated tobacco products operate without a combustion process. As a result, the aroma left behind tends to be lighter than that of regular cigarettes. In addition to reducing the odour produced, alternative tobacco products also do not generate combustion ash. This factor is considered to provide greater comfort for some users, as they do not need to deal with cigarette ash residue that can dirty the surrounding area. Ease of use and increasingly modern device designs are also particular attractions for adult consumers. A number of studies indicate that technological innovation is one of the important factors influencing interest in alternative tobacco products. A study published in the Accounting and Management Journal in 2024 found that perceptions of innovation, user experience, and product characteristics influence adult smokers’ decisions to try or switch to alternatives other than conventional cigarettes. Social factors also play a role in changing consumer behaviour. Cigarette smoke odour, which is often a complaint in work environments, transportation, and shared spaces, has led some adult smokers to seek options considered more comfortable for themselves and those around them. Alternative tobacco products have thus emerged as one of the widely considered options. Nevertheless, experts remind that alternative tobacco products still contain nicotine, which is addictive. Therefore, these products are not without risk and are only intended for adult smokers who choose to continue using nicotine-based products. The rising trend in alternative tobacco use indicates a shift in consumption patterns among adult smokers. Besides technological innovation factors, comfort aspects such as minimal smoke odour, no ash production, and ease of use are some of the reasons these products are gaining increasing attention in various countries, including Indonesia.
