Alternative Route Between Semarang and Demak Regencies Cut Off by Landslide
The alternative transport route connecting Ungaran in Semarang Regency to Mranggen in Demak Regency has been severed by a major landslide in Kalongan Village, Central Java, on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
The rupture of the inter-regency connecting road occurred gradually from February 2022 until February 2026 as a result of high-intensity rainfall that triggered ground movement and a landslide extending approximately 250 metres in length and reaching depths of around 100 metres. The collapse threatens residential settlements situated approximately 20 metres from the affected area.
This infrastructure failure represents a significant disruption to regional connectivity, with the alternative route serving as an important link between the two regencies. The gradual nature of the road’s deterioration highlights the ongoing challenges posed by geological instability in the region, exacerbated by climatic factors and inadequate mitigation measures.
