Sergey Brin, a key figure behind the founding of Google, has decided to return to the fray and oversee artificial intelligence (AI) research projects at Alphabet after previously withdrawing from day-to-day operational activities. He confirmed that the massive leaps in AI innovation have rendered his earlier decision to take early retirement irrelevant. During a recent discussion session at Stanford University, he shared his personal story of feeling a loss of direction and a lack of intellectual stimulation after stepping away from his technical duties. It was this experience that drove him to plunge back into Google’s AI research and development laboratories. Brin had initially decided to retire about a month before the Covid-19 pandemic, with plans to study physics. However, once his routine disappeared, he felt the absence of a space for technical stimulation. When Alphabet began reopening offices on a limited basis, Brin returned and eventually became involved in developing the Gemini AI model, which he described as deeply satisfying. He now considers that choosing to retire would have been a huge mistake. On the same occasion, Brin also evaluated Google’s AI investment journey. He noted the company had been somewhat unaggressive after releasing the Transformer research in 2017, which now forms the foundation of large language models across various firms. He said internal caution slowed the launch of a chatbot due to concerns about accuracy, while competitors like OpenAI moved faster and spurred widespread adoption of generative AI. Brin also reflected on several missteps from the past, including Google Glass. ‘Everyone thinks they are the next Steve Jobs. I have also made that mistake,’ he added. Nevertheless, Brin believes Google remains superior thanks to long-term investments in neural network research, specialised chips, and global-scale data centres. According to him, only a few companies are capable of operating the entire AI technology chain, from research to computing infrastructure. Brin also touched on talent readiness in the AI era. He encouraged students to continue choosing technical fields and not to switch simply because AI can write code. In his view, programming retains high value and is a fundamental part of developing AI systems. Brin said his current involvement is driven by the rapid dynamics of research. ‘If you miss AI news for a month, you will be left far behind,’ he stated. Google’s prowess in AI development has made the fortunes of Brin and Larry Page, as the founders of Google, increasingly abundant. Brin is now the third-richest person in the world, with assets of US$253.5 billion, or Rp4,512 trillion.
