Alphard Driver Who Ran Red Light with Fake Plates at Bundaran HI Fined by Police
The case of a traffic violation involving a black Toyota Alphard at the Bundaran HI roundabout in Central Jakarta has reached a resolution. The Traffic Law Enforcement Sub-directorate of the Metro Jaya Regional Police has officially sanctioned the driver, identified by the initials RPW, after he was proven to have run a red light while using a fake registration plate.
The violation occurred on Wednesday (22/7) at around 12.13 WIB and went viral on social media after the vehicle was recorded running a pedestrian crossing light.
Responding to the incident, the police swiftly launched a thorough investigation. “We have conducted a clarification and taken action by issuing a fine to the driver of the black Alphard who ran a red light on Jalan MH Thamrin, around the Bundaran HI area, heading north,” said AKBP Ojo Ruslani, Head of the Traffic Law Enforcement Sub-directorate at Metro Jaya Police, in Jakarta on Saturday (25/7).
Ojo further explained that the driver in question was summoned for questioning at the Sub-directorate’s office on Friday (24/7) evening. “Officers then summoned the driver, with the initials RPW, to provide a statement on Friday (24/7) evening at the Traffic Law Enforcement Sub-directorate office of Metro Jaya Police,” Ojo stated.
Following document verification and a physical inspection of the vehicle at the police office, a surprising fact about the luxury car’s true identity was uncovered. The number plate installed at the time of the incident did not match the vehicle’s legitimate registration data. “Meanwhile, the number plate D 1828 XHQ, which was attached when the violation occurred, is actually registered to a silver Daihatsu Gran Max from West Bandung Regency,” Ojo explained.
The legitimate registration number for the black Toyota Alphard is B 97 ELI, registered under the name Dr. Elly Herawati Pengabean. As evidence, officers confiscated the fake number plate D 1828 XHQ.
As a result of these multiple violations, the driver is charged under two articles of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation (UU LLAJ):
For running the red light (APILL): Charged under Article 287 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 106 paragraph (4) letter c, carrying a maximum penalty of two months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to Rp500,000.
For using a fake or invalid number plate: Charged under Article 280 in conjunction with Article 68 paragraph (1) concerning the use of a number plate not issued by the Police, carrying a maximum penalty of two months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to Rp500,000.
Previously, the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate had scheduled summons for several related parties, including the vehicle owner and the security guard who was involved in a verbal altercation with the driver at the scene. “I will issue a summons for clarification to the Alphard owner, and then a summons for clarification to the security guard who argued with the driver. The summons are scheduled for Friday (24/7) and Monday (27/7),” Ojo said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday (23/7). After the initial separate examinations were completed, the police planned to bring both parties together for a direct confrontation to comprehensively investigate the entire sequence of events.
