Alphard Driver Faces Sanctions After Running Red Light and Confronting Security Guard in Central Jakarta
The incident involving a Toyota Alphard that ran a red light and was subsequently reprimanded by a security guard has had further repercussions. The driver’s actions were also deemed to have endangered pedestrians who were crossing at the pelican crossing. The event occurred in the Bundaran HI area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/7). The case drew widespread public attention due to the alleged arrogant behaviour of the vehicle’s occupants towards the security officer.
CCTV footage showed the black MPV continuing to drive through the pedestrian crossing while the traffic light was red, as several people were crossing from the left side of the road. “The driver ran the red light at the crossing in front of the Pullman Hotel,” said Menteng Metro Police Chief AKBP Braiel Arnold Rondonuwu. He explained that a security guard then reprimanded the driver by tapping on the car window. The driver took offence, leading to a verbal dispute.
Both parties subsequently went to the Thamrin Police Post, where officers facilitated mediation and the matter was resolved amicably. However, the driver was still issued an electronic traffic ticket (ETLE) for the red-light violation. “He received an electronic ticket,” Braiel stated.
Police are further investigating the suspicion that the luxury vehicle was using a licence plate not assigned to it. Authorities will conduct a thorough examination of the entire incident, including the alleged misuse of the licence plate. “We are examining everything related to the event, including the vehicle used and the articles we will charge,” an official told detikcom on Thursday (23/7).
Photos and videos circulating on social media showed the black Alphard bearing the registration number D-1828-XHQ. A check on the West Java Regional Revenue Agency website indicated that this plate is registered to a metallic silver Daihatsu. Police plan to summon both parties on Friday (24/7) and Monday (27/7) for a confrontation at the Traffic Law Enforcement Sub-directorate of the Metro Jaya Regional Police.
Police have confirmed that no physical violence occurred during the mediation at the Thamrin Police Post. “There was no brawl. During the mediation process, there was no violence or physical assault,” said Menteng Police Chief AKBP Braiel on Thursday (23/7). He noted that both parties agreed to reconcile during mediation but added that the police remain open to receiving formal reports if any party feels dissatisfied with the process. “We invite them to file a report if there are any grievances regarding the mediation. We will follow up according to legal procedures,” he said.
