Alleged thief shot to death

JAKARTA (JP): A 22-year-old man believed to have been involved in a series of motorcycle thefts was shot dead yesterday while resisting arrest on Jl. Percetakan Negara, Central Jakarta.

The Johor Baru police precinct confirmed the shooting of Arifin, adding that the resident of Kramat Pulo, Paseban district in Central Jakarta, had been under police observation for a week.

Arifin, a junior high school dropout, was shot in the chest and heart after he ignored warning shots.

Arifin's mother, Pinensia, was hysterical while at Cipto Mangunkusumo general hospital's morgue. "Arifin's spirit will take revenge on the police who shot him," she screamed.

Reports said Pinensia was told by a relative on Wednesday night that the police would release Arifin if she could deliver a sum of money, but Arifin was shot dead the following morning. (04)
