Alleged Plot to Overthrow Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim's Government, Leading Family Suspected Involvement

A prominent family is suspected of being behind an alleged coup plot against the Malaysian government, as confirmed by Police Inspector-General Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail on Friday, 27 February 2026.

He stated that police are investigating reports filed concerning the coup plot. The family in question, currently involved in legal proceedings, is suspected of engaging a UK-based media consultancy firm to launch a defamation campaign against the government and Prime Minister.

“The investigation is being conducted by the Secret Criminal Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), Criminal Investigation Department, Bukit Aman, under Section 124B of the Penal Code: in any manner, directly or indirectly, engaging in activities prejudicial to parliamentary democracy,” he said, according to Malaymail.
