Alleged Extortion of Contractor by Medan Prosecutor: Supervisory Body Re-examines Witnesses
The Junior Attorney General for Supervision (Jamwas) has re-examined a number of witnesses in connection with an extortion case implicating the Head of the Medan District Prosecutor’s Office, Ridwan Sujana Angsar, and the Coordinator for General Crimes at the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) High Prosecutor’s Office, Noven Verderikus Bulan. The alleged victim is a contractor named Hironimus Sonbay, also known as Roni.
Roni’s lawyer, Fransisco Bessi, stated that the examination lasted approximately eight hours at the NTT High Prosecutor’s Office. The witnesses examined included Roni, Fransisco, Roni’s father Dominikus Sonbay, Roni’s driver Didik Haryanto Brand, and Lucky Lusi, among others.
According to Fransisco, the examination was led by Inspector III of the Attorney General’s Office, Harli Siregar. He noted that all witness statements were consistent with one another and that new material regarding the alleged extortion was presented by Roni and Didik. Fransisco confirmed that the parties involved will face disciplinary, ethical, and other internal sanctions.
Fransisco also revealed that Didik and Roni were granted permission by the Class IIB Kupang Detention Centre to attend the examination. During the session, witnesses testified about an attempt by a prosecutor with the initials WM from the Kupang District Prosecutor’s Office to bribe Didik and Roni on 15 June 2026. The bribe, carried in a backpack along with a prepared statement, was allegedly intended to persuade them to retract their previous testimonies and declare the extortion claims a slander.
Fransisco expressed gratitude to the NTT High Prosecutor, the Attorney General, Jamwas, and the Junior Attorney General for Intelligence (Jamintel) for their professional handling of the case, calling it a progressive step in addressing matters involving prosecutors. He noted that reports concerning prosecutors rarely progressed to a case inspection in the past.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations for the NTT High Prosecutor’s Office, Anak Agung Raka Putra Dharmana, had not yet responded to requests for confirmation regarding the day’s examination. The extortion case initially came to light during a plea hearing for defendant Hironimus Sonbay at the Kupang Corruption Court. During that session, Fransisco alleged that the two prosecutors demanded money from Roni in connection with primary and secondary school renovation projects in Kupang City and Kupang Regency. Ridwan currently serves as the Head of the Medan District Prosecutor’s Office in North Sumatra, while Noven is assigned to the NTT High Prosecutor’s Office.
