All Targeted by US-Israel, Jewish Synagogue in Tehran Completely Destroyed
A synagogue in Iran’s capital was reported to have been completely destroyed as a result of a joint United States (US) and Israel attack on Tuesday morning (7/4/2026) local time. This information was conveyed by Iranian local media, including the Mehr news agency and the Shargh newspaper.
“According to initial information, the Rafi-Nia Synagogue… was completely destroyed in this morning’s attack,” wrote Shargh in its report, as quoted by AFP.
Shargh described the synagogue as one of the important centres for the Jewish community, particularly for Jews from Khorasan, to gather and celebrate religious activities.
The Jewish community is one of the legally recognised minority groups in Iran. Nevertheless, its numbers are relatively small and continue to dwindle since many members left the country after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
To date, no official data has been published regarding the exact number of Jews in Iran. However, various estimates indicate that its population remains only a few thousand people.
For information, Iran is predominantly Shia Muslim. Nevertheless, the country’s constitution also recognises the existence of several minority religions, including Sunni Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity, each of which has representation in parliament.
