All survive as ship sinks

JAYAPURA, Papua: The KM Asmat Daci cargo ship belonging to the Asmat regency administration in Papua province sank while sailing to the city of Merauke early on Sunday, officials said.

No casualties were reported, as all 10 crew members and nine passengers survived the accident, which occurred at about 1:15 a.m. off Habee Island in Kimaan district.

Merauke official Petrus Kutmo said the survivors were rescued by a ship owned by PT Korindo at about 5:45 a.m.

The ship is thought to have sunk after developing a leak as it was heading from Agats in Asmat to Merauke. The ship was transporting kerosene and building materials. --JP
