All residents and tourists affected by landslide in Xizang evacuated

Residents affected by a landslide in the Gyirong area of the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwest China have been relocated, and all stranded tourists have been moved, local authorities said on Thursday (27/8).

A total of 499 villagers and construction workers have been provided with proper accommodation. Meanwhile, 555 affected tourists have been evacuated and relocated under the coordination of the culture and tourism authorities. No tourists remain stranded.

Civil aviation authorities have also joined the rescue efforts. As of 3 p.m. local time on Thursday, civil aviation services had transported 324 rescue personnel and delivered 24 tonnes of rescue equipment, daily necessities and medical supplies to the disaster-affected area to support emergency response and the relocation of affected residents.

The landslide struck Gyirong Port in the Gyirong area of Xizang on Wednesday (26/8) morning local time. As of 8 a.m. local time on Thursday, three people had been confirmed dead, 558 were still listed as missing, and two local villagers had been successfully rescued.
