All national roads in three Sumatran provinces now operational: Minister

National roads in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra are now 100 per cent operational, Coordinating Minister Karnavian announced during a coordination meeting on Sumatra post-disaster recovery in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Karnavian, concurrently serving as Chair of the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force, added that repairs to regional roads in the three provinces have also shown rapid progress.

All three provinces reported over 90 per cent functionality: regional roads in Aceh are 92 per cent operational, North Sumatra is at 99 per cent, and West Sumatra has reached 90 per cent.

In addition to national roads, national bridges in the three provinces are also 100 per cent functional, though some remain temporary through the support of Bailey bridges, culverts and other technical fixes.

The minister noted that repairs for regional bridges are still being accelerated, with progress reaching 47 per cent in Aceh, 95 per cent in North Sumatra and 69 per cent in West Sumatra.

He emphasised that the task force has prioritised restoring national road access, as it serves as the essential foundation for accelerating logistics distribution, public mobility and economic recovery in the affected regions.

The government has also deployed support personnel from the National Armed Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri) to assist in the construction of emergency bridges.

Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra were previously hit by heavy rainfall-triggered floods and landslides in late November 2025.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) records, as of 18 February, the disasters claimed 1,206 lives and affected 2,165 road sections and 860 bridges.
