All Indonesian Petrol Stations to Sell B50 Biodiesel from Tomorrow
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) targets the full implementation of the 50% biodiesel (B50) blend in diesel fuel starting tomorrow, Thursday, 1 October 2026.
While the B50 programme officially commenced on 1 July 2026, a three-month transition period was established to ensure full availability across all Indonesian petrol stations (SPBU) by tomorrow. The Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, Eniya Listiani Dewi, explained that this transition was necessary to allow business entities to exhaust remaining B40 stocks before switching entirely to the 50% palm oil blend.
Eniya noted that implementation is progressing alongside the increasing availability of B50 products in various domestic regions. “From 1 October (2026), all points will be full B50. That is why the transition period is written into the Ministerial Decree,” she stated during the B50 Mandatory Launch event in July 2026.
The three-month adjustment period considers the readiness of 34 business entities involved in the biodiesel blending process. PT Pertamina (Persero), the primary distributor, was estimated to require approximately two months to clear old stocks, while other business entities required a longer period of up to three months.
As of early September 202<0xA0>26, the Ministry of ESDM reported that national B50 implementation had reached 80% and is set to be completed by October. Eniya also mentioned that PT Pertamina (Persero) had already distributed B50 to 90% of its petrol station network by early September.
The government continues to monitor all distributing business entities to ensure product availability during the final month of the transition. Eniya emphasised that Pertamina’s delivery achievement for B50 has exceeded 90% over the past two months.
With the B50 rollout nearing completion, the government has begun technical studies for a potential increase to a B60 blend, with a target implementation date in 2027. Researchers are currently investigating the feasibility of adding 10% HVO to the existing 50% blend.
The legal basis for the B50 Mandatory Programme is Minister of ESDM Regulation Number 4 of 2025 and Ministerial Decree ESDM Number 257.K/EK.01/MEM.E/2026. This policy mandates a 50% biodiesel blend for all diesel fuel types, requiring all biofuel and fuel distributors to adhere to established quality standards.
The Ministry of ESDM anticipates significant economic and environmental benefits from the B50 implementation, including foreign exchange savings of approximately Rp 170 trillion per year. Additionally, the policy is expected to add Rp 23.49 trillion in value to the CPO industry, support 2.1 million jobs, and reduce emissions by an estimated 44.46 million tonnes per year.
