All 13 Victims of Bantargebang Landfill Collapse Located, Seven Confirmed Dead
Search and rescue (SAR) operations at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) were officially concluded on Tuesday, 10 March, following the successful evacuation of the final victim buried under the waste collapse. The head of the Jakarta SAR office, Desiana Kartika Bahari, confirmed that the last victim was recovered on Monday, 9 March, at 23.30 WIB. The victim, identified as Riki Supriadi (40), was found deceased. “With the discovery of all victims and no reports of additional missing persons, the SAR operation is hereby closed at 00.00 WIB today,” Desiana stated officially.
According to final data from Basarnas DKI Jakarta, a total of 13 victims were involved in the tragedy. Seven victims were pronounced dead, whilst six survivors were identified as Budiman, Johan, Safifudin, Slamet, Ato, and Dofir.
The incident, which claimed seven lives, drew sharp criticism from the Minister of Environment and head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. He emphasised that the disaster need not have occurred had waste management been conducted in accordance with regulations. Nurofiq described Bantargebang as the “tip of the iceberg” in Jakarta’s broader waste management failures, noting that the facility has accumulated 80 million tonnes of waste over the past 37 years. The continued use of open dumping methods constitutes a clear violation of Law Number 18 of 2008.
“This is a stark warning to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately cease open dumping methods that continue to endanger human lives. This incident is evidence of systemic failure that can no longer be tolerated,” Hanif declared. The Ministry of Environment and BPLH have initiated a comprehensive investigation and strict law enforcement measures to ensure that waste management problems in the capital do not claim further lives in the future.
