Sayyidina Ali bin Abu Thalib, a companion of Prophet Muhammad SAW, was renowned for his unwavering principles in upholding the Sharia and the morals of the Ummah. This firmness was evident in an incident during the reign of Caliph Abu Bakr when a report emerged concerning homosexual practices in a remote area. During a consultation held to determine the punishment for the offenders, Ali bin Abu Thalib presented the sternest view among the other companions. When Khalid bin Al-Walid reported such acts to Caliph Abu Bakr and the companions were asked for their opinions, Ali asserted that the act was a major sin that had led Allah SWT to destroy the people of Prophet Lot. Based on this, the nephew of the Messenger of Allah held the opinion that the perpetrators of such a crime deserved a severe punishment, akin to the torment inflicted upon Lot’s people.
