Alida Centre to hold seminar on mixed marriage

The Alida Centre of Jakarta is organizing a half-day seminar
on Mixed Marriage Viewed From the Legal Perspective, at Mutiara
I, Hotel Gran Melia, Kuningan, Jakarta on Oct. 22, 2005.

The centre said that the seminar was planned in connection
with the proposed citizenship bill requiring expatriate men to
deposit some Rp 500 million (about US$50,000) before marrying an
Indonesian woman.

Topics to be discussed include: Mixed marriage as seen from
the perspective of the House of Representatives special
citizenship law team, by Slamet Effendi Yusuf, the head of the
House team; Citizenship law and the dignity and rights of mixed
marriage couples by Ratna Basaramukti, director of the Legal Aid
Institute.

Dr. Gadis Arivia from Jurnal Perempuan will speak on the
dignity and rights of mixed marriage couples as seen from
philosophical and gender perspectives, while Prof. Dr. Valerine,
J.L.K., a Supreme Court judge and a professor from the University
of Indonesia, will discuss the future legal status of mixed
marriage with regard to Law No. 62/1958 on citizenship and Law
No. 1/1974 on marriage".

The seminar will also feature feminist Nuning JP;CD;
Hallet, who will talk on her own experience of mixed marriage.

Effendi Gazali, Ph.D. MPS ID, director of Alida Centre will
act as moderator.
