Ali Sadikin receives award from LIPI

JAKARTA: Former city governor Ali Sadikin, 75, received an award from the National Institute of Sciences (LIPI) on Thursday for his role in maritime development during his term from 1966 to 1977.

LIPI presented the Sarwono Award to Ali, who had supported maritime research in three areas covering 19 hectares in Ancol, North Jakarta, which is now known as the LIPI Oceanology Research Center, Antara reported.

Ali also inaugurated the maritime research center in Pulau Pari, located north of Jakarta, in 1967.

A retired lieutenant general, Ali looked weak as he suffers from kidney problems. But he enthusiastically told reporters of his commitment to make Jakarta a maritime city and criticized the government for their failure to curb illegal fishing activities. --JP
