Ali Khamenei Laid to Rest in Mashhad Following Death in US-Israel Attack
Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of Iran, will be buried after dying in an attack by the United States and Israel in Tehran. The Iranian government has designated the holy city of Mashhad as the location of his burial. According to detikNews, the Fars news agency reported that the decision was taken by the Iranian authorities. Khamenei will be buried in Mashhad, near his father’s tomb in the Imam Reza complex. Mashhad is Iran’s second-largest city and is nicknamed the ‘Holy City’ because it houses the Imam Reza holy complex, the resting place of the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims. A large farewell ceremony will be held in Tehran before the burial, according to the Revolutionary Guards on their Telegram account. The Iranian authorities have not yet set a date for the burial. Khamenei died in the joint American-Israeli attack on Saturday (Feb 28) Tehran time. Following his death, power was entrusted to a three-person interim council until the Assembly of Experts elects his successor. The council includes the president, the head of judiciary, and a legal expert from the Guardian Council, the body that oversees legislation and screens election candidates. Fars, quoting an official aware of the process, said that for security reasons, the final session of the Assembly of Experts is likely to be postponed until after the funeral. Iranian media said the 88-member body headquarters, located in the holy city of Qom, south of Tehran, was struck on Tuesday (Mar 3) by the US-Israel attack. Its main headquarters in the capital was struck a day earlier.
