Ali Khamenei laid to rest at Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad
Mashhad, Iran (ANTARA) - The body of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been laid to rest at his final resting place within the Imam Reza shrine complex in Mashhad, north-eastern Iran.
Ali Khamenei’s burial took place in the Dar Al-Dhikr prayer hall within the Imam Reza shrine complex on Thursday (9 July) local time.
The funeral ceremonies for Ali Khamenei, which began on Friday last week (3 July), were attended by political officials representing more than 45 countries and scholars from over 90 nations.
The procession began at the Grand Musalla of Tehran over the past weekend, where millions of people gathered to pay their final respects. The procession then continued in Tehran on Monday (6 July).
After Tehran, the procession moved on to Tuesday (7 July) at the mosques of Qom and Jamkaran. Then on Wednesday (8 July), similar commemorative ceremonies were held in Najaf and Karbala, Iraq.
Following nearly a week of funeral processions, millions of mourners took part in the culmination of the ceremonies in Mashhad, with the final farewell for the late Ali Khamenei taking place at the Imam Reza shrine on Thursday.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several members of his family were killed on 28 February 2026, the first day of the United States-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
