Alfamart's 'One Egg a Day' Programme Supports Child Stunting Reduction
The momentum of National Children’s Day has become an opportunity for Alfamart to support the acceleration of stunting reduction through its ‘One Egg a Day’ (Satu Telur Sehari/STS) programme. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to assist with child nutrition interventions while improving family understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
The programme, now in its fourth year, targets 2,700 children indicated as stunted in 39 regencies/cities with the distribution of more than 510,000 eggs over six months of implementation. Alfamart also complements the programme with nutritional education for parents. This step is taken so that the nutritional interventions provided can run more optimally through changes in parenting patterns, eating habits, and family understanding of the importance of fulfilling balanced nutrition from an early age.
Alfamart utilised the momentum of National Children’s Day, commemorated every 23 July, to present direct education from health workers or nutritionists to the parents of beneficiaries of the One Egg a Day Programme in each implementing city. As held in Bogor City, 35 beneficiary children and their parents participated in nutritional education at the Mikro Cinema Layar Digi Alfamart on Wednesday (8/7/2026).
In the education session, Dietitian from Bangun Hidup Sehat Wellness Center, Aqila Maharani, explained that stunting is a condition influenced by various factors, ranging from lack of nutritional intake, recurrent infections, an unhealthy environment, suboptimal parenting, to limited access to health services. The provision of animal protein, including eggs, is one source of nutrition that supports growth, certainly accompanied by the consumption of other balanced nutritious foods. On that occasion, Aqila also corrected a belief still widely held by the public that egg consumption can cause boils in children.
‘Boils are not caused by eating too many eggs, but rather due to bacterial infection. So, parents do not need to worry about giving eggs to children as long as they are consumed according to their nutritional needs,’ said Aqila Maharani in a written statement on Thursday (23/7/2026).
In addition, parents were also given various examples of simple menus made from eggs that retain their nutritional content, such as vegetable omelettes, egg soup, egg stew, and vegetable egg rolls to make them more appealing to children. Besides Bogor City, other implementations were also held in Tegal Regency, Sumedang, Jember, Serang, Kendal, Lampung, and other cities.
The programme’s reach continues to grow from year to year. Alfamart’s One Egg a Day Programme targets children aged 1 to 3 years who are recorded as stunting based on data collection with the Health Office and Posyandu cadres in each region. During the six-month implementation starting from May 2026, each child receives one egg per day. Distribution is carried out periodically through the Health Office and local Posyandu cadres so that assistance to beneficiaries can run sustainably.
The programme’s journey also shows an increasing impact from year to year. In 2022, Alfamart distributed 177,000 eggs to 1,000 children in 10 regencies/cities. The programme then continued in 2024 with the distribution of 103,000 eggs to 591 children in 12 regencies/cities. The following year, the reach was expanded to 25 regencies/cities through the distribution of 189,000 eggs to 1,000 children. Meanwhile, in 2026, the programme achieved its largest implementation since it was first run, with the distribution of more than 510,000 eggs to 2,700 children in 39 regencies/cities.
Alfamart’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, Rani Wijaya, said the One Egg a Day programme continues to be developed based on evaluations from previous years’ implementations. According to her, the expansion of the programme’s reach is a form of Alfamart’s commitment to providing wider benefits to the community through collaboration with local governments, health offices, Posyandu cadres, and various partners.
‘This programme continues to grow from year to year. This expansion shows that cross-party collaboration can have an increasingly greater impact in supporting efforts to reduce stunting in Indonesia,’ said Rani. According to her, the success of the programme is not only measured by the number of eggs distributed or the extent of the area reached, but also by changes in family behaviour in meeting children’s nutritional needs. Based on internal monitoring results in 2025, around 72 percent of beneficiary children experienced weight gain as one indicator of improved nutritional status. This achievement forms the basis for Alfamart to continue strengthening the quality of the programme through assistance and education for parents.
‘Nutritional interventions will be more optimal when accompanied by increased parental knowledge. Therefore, we not only provide eggs but also present direct education from experts so that families understand the importance of balanced nutrition, proper eating patterns, and parenting that supports child growth and development. The hope is that the benefits of the One Egg a Day Programme will not only be felt during the programme but will also form healthy living habits in families and contribute to the national effort to reduce stunting rates,’ concluded Rani.
