Palembang (ANTARA) - Hundreds of residents accompanied the body of Alex Noerdin to his final resting place at the Kebun Bunga Public Cemetery, Palembang, on Thursday.

The Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, the Regent of Empat Lawang, Joncik Muhammad, and the Regent of Banyuasin, Askolani, were among those present at the funeral procession.

The body arrived at the Kebun Bunga Public Cemetery at around 11:00 AM, after prayers were held at the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jayowikramo Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Palembang.

The former Governor of South Sumatra for two terms (2008 - 2018), Alex Noerdin, passed away at Siloam Semanggi Hospital, Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 25, 2026) at 1:30 PM.

Alex Noerdin passed away at the age of 75. He was born in 1950.

Alex Noerdin was known as the Governor of South Sumatra for a decade and was one of the influential figures in the development and promotion of the region at the national and international levels.

During his tenure, Alex Noerdin supported various infrastructure projects and the development of sports in South Sumatra. One of his most memorable achievements was his active role in the successful organisation of international sporting events that raised the profile of Palembang on the world stage, namely the 2011 SEA Games and the 2018 Asian Games.
