Alex Noerdin Passes Away, Criminal Case Closed
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) stated that the criminal case involving former Governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin, has been closed following his death on Wednesday (25/2/2026).
The Head of the Legal Information Centre of the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, said that, legally, if a suspect or defendant dies, the criminal case is automatically dropped.
“If he dies, the criminal case against him is automatically closed by law. The others will continue to be processed in court,” Anang told Kompas.com on Wednesday.
“Regarding his capacity as a witness, with the permission of the panel of judges, his testimony in the case file will be read out as much as possible,” he said.
Meanwhile, if there are allegations of state losses enjoyed by the deceased in the case, efforts to recover them can be pursued through civil proceedings.
“If there are losses enjoyed by the person concerned, it will be handed over to the Bidang Datun (State Attorney) to file a civil lawsuit,” said Anang.
“We express our deepest condolences for his passing. We hope the family will be strong in facing this,” said Anang.
Previously, it was reported that Alex Noerdin died after undergoing intensive care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Siloam Semanggi Hospital, Jakarta, on Wednesday (25/2/2026). Previously, Alex Noerdin had been treated at Siloam Sriwijaya Hospital, Palembang.
However, because his health continued to deteriorate, the senior Golkar Party politician was referred to Jakarta to receive further treatment.
“Innalilahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun. Mr. Alex Noerdin has passed away at Siloam Semanggi Hospital, Jakarta, at 13:30 WIB,” said Okta in a written statement on Wednesday.
Alex was supposed to attend a hearing as a witness last Monday (23/2/2026) at the Corruption Court of the Class IA State Court of Palembang, regarding the alleged corruption case in the revitalization of the Cinde Market.
