Alex Noerdin Dies, Attorney General’s Office Explains Why Corruption Case Against Him is Dropped

Jakarta, VIVA – The legal status of the late Alex Noerdin has now been clarified. The Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the criminal case against the former Governor of South Sumatra, who served two terms, has been automatically dropped following his death.
Alex passed away on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, while still a defendant in a corruption case related to the revitalisation of the Cinde Market in Palembang.
“If someone dies, the criminal case against them is automatically closed by law,” said the Head of the Attorney General’s Office’s Public Information Centre, Anang Supriatna, on Thursday, 26 February 2026.
However, the legal process for the case will not be completely halted. Anang confirmed that other defendants in the same case will continue to be tried at the Class 1 State Court in Palembang. Furthermore, any potential state losses allegedly gained by Alex will still be investigated through a different legal avenue.
“If there are losses enjoyed by the person concerned, it will later be handed over to the Bidang datun (State Attorney) to file a civil lawsuit,” he said.
Regarding Alex’s testimony, which has been recorded in the Minutes of Examination (BAP), prosecutors will still be able to read it out in court.
“Regarding Alex Noerdin’s testimony, which is still needed in the trial, it will later be read out by the Public Prosecutor (JPU) as in the Minutes of Examination (BAP),” said Anang.
Previously, it was reported that the former Governor of South Sumatra for the periods 2008-2013 and 2013-2018, Alex Noerdin, died in Jakarta on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
The family spokesperson, Okta Alfarisi, when confirmed in Palembang on Wednesday, said that Alex Noerdin passed away after undergoing treatment at Siloam Semanggi Hospital, Jakarta, on Wednesday at 13:30 WIB.
“The body is currently being transported back to Palembang. The family home is on Jalan Merdeka, Palembang,” said Okta.
Alex Noerdin had previously undergone treatment at Siloam Hospital in Palembang because his health had been deteriorating since Friday, 20 February 2026. Due to limited facilities, the former Regent of Musi Banyuasin was referred to Siloam Hospital in Jakarta.
Alex Noerdin is currently a defendant in a corruption case related to the revitalisation of the Cinde Market in Palembang, which is being investigated by the South Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office, and the case is still ongoing at the Palembang Corruption Court.
