The peak of the second wave of mudik travel on Wednesday 18 March in Central Java and central Central Java regions is likely to be lashed by light to moderate rainfall and tidal flooding (rob) in northern waters, prompting travellers to remain vigilant and cautious.

In the morning, weather conditions will generally be partly cloudy to cloudy, with light to moderate rain likely to affect the Karimunjawa archipelago region. Moving into midday through late evening, light to moderate rainfall will expand across 26 districts, particularly in mountainous areas, highlands, the northern coast (Pantura), and central Central Java.

High waves in Central Java’s waters have subsided, although tidal flooding (rob) will continue in northern waters from 16:00-20:00 WIB with a maximum height of 0.9 metres, causing flooding in several districts along the Pantura coast of Central Java and potentially disrupting residents’ activities.

“Although slightly reduced, tidal flooding continues, so residents in the Pantura areas from Brebes to Rembang are urged to remain vigilant,” said Shafira Tsanyfadhila, a forecaster at the BMKG Maritime Station of Tanjung Emas Semarang.

According to Shafira Tsanyfadhila, tidal flooding along the Pantura coast in Central Java, in addition to inundating residential areas in coastal regions, also disrupts residents’ activities such as transportation, cargo handling at ports, land-based fish farming, and salt farming.

Farita Rachmawati, a forecaster at the BMKG Ahmad Yani Meteorological Station in Semarang, stated that extreme weather in Central Java has begun to ease on Wednesday 18 March, but 26 districts remain at risk of light to moderate rainfall, particularly along mudik routes, so residents travelling are urged to remain cautious.

“Alert: moderate to heavy rainfall is possible along mudik routes, as light to moderate rain may affect dozens of districts throughout the day and night,” said Farita Rachmawati on Wednesday 18 March.

The districts at risk of light to moderate rainfall, according to Farita Rachmawati, are Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Mungkid, Boyolali, Wonogiri, Karanganyar, Sragen, Grobogan, Blora, Rembang, Pati, Kudus, Jepara, Temanggung, Kendal, Batang, Kajen, Pemalang, Slawi, Brebes, Tegal, Bumiayu, Majenang and Ambarawa.

Other areas of Central Java will experience light rainfall, continued Farita Rachmawati, with winds blowing from west to north at speeds of 10-30 kilometres per hour, air temperature ranging from 18-32 degrees Celsius, and air humidity ranging from 60-95 per cent.
