Alcoholic drinks (1)

Alcoholic drinks (1)

From Pelita

We are very disappointed about the legalization of the
regional ruling on alcoholic drinks by Jakarta Municipality
legislators on Sept. 4, 1996.

We feel that representatives, who were elected by the people,
are not really acting in the interests of the public, such as by
upholding moral values, for instance. Approval of the regional
ruling on alcoholic drinks will only carry a wider impact.

Before alcoholic drinks were adopted in the regional rulings,
we often observed their heavy consumption among young people,
students and adults. What's more, if consumption of such drinks
were to be legalized, we are sure that most young people,
students, or anyone eager to consume alcoholic drinks would have
easier access to them when the government legalized its
distribution.

We should therefore dwell on the thought that leaders will one
day have to answer for their actions to God Almighty. God has
strictly forbidden the consumption of alcoholic drinks, which is
written in the Koran.

We appeal, therefore, to the authorities to withdraw the
ruling on alcoholic drinks which was approved by the legislators.
