Alcatel wins China's order
SINGAPORE (Reuter): French telecoms equipment group Alcatel
Alsthom said yesterday it had won a US$58 million extension order
in China to supply network infrastructure equipment.
Alcatel said in a statement that the extension order from
Jiangsu PTA was through its joint venture Shanghai Bell Alcatel
Mobile Communication.
Alcatel will provide mobile switching centers (MSC), base
station controllers and several hundred base transceiver stations
to increase the coverage and capacity of a Global System for
Mobile Communications (GSM) network put in use in 1996.
The extension order would bring the capacity of the network to
450,000 subscribers, it said.
With this new order, Alcatel supplies 50 percent of Jiangsu
PTA's GSM network infrastructure, making Jiangsu PTA its biggest
customer in China.
The deal was signed in May in Paris.
Alcatel was in Singapore to participate in the Asia Telecom 97
trade fair.
