Albright to visit Singapore
SINGAPORE (DPA): U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright
plans to visit Singapore July 29 to July 30 to review her
country's relations with the island nation, an American embassy
official said yesterday.
Albright's trip marks the first visit of a U.S. secretary of
state to Singapore during the administration of President Bill
Clinton.
Washington officials said Albright would use the visit to
explain U.S. policy on regional issues, including support for
human rights in Myanmar and China, for which the United States
has been widely criticized in Singapore.
Albright would seek the views of Singapore leaders on regional
developments, U.S. officials said. Albright is scheduled to meet
with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister Lee Kuan
Yew during her visit.
