Albert advances to last eight in boxing c'ships
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian middleweight Albert Papilaya
outscored Kyrgyzstan's Malik Borbaschev 8-1 during the
preliminary round of the world amateur boxing championships in
Berlin on Tuesday.
Papilaya, a quarterfinalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics,
will take on Poland's Tomasz Borrowski, who beat Sergei Savitzki
from Belarus 7-1, in the quarterfinals.
Borbaschev was very aggressive and confident he would stop
Papilaya in the first round.
Papilaya responded with exceptional composure and tact,
providing him with an evasive answer to Borbaschev's fierce
attacks. Papilaya's ability to stay composed enabled him to
handle the emotional Kyrgyzstani.
Papilaya gradually collected points by landing unexpected
blows to the face and accurate body punches.
Indonesian team manager Bambang Asmanu said he believed
Papilaya would win right from the start.
"After having studied Borbachev's fighting patterns on video,
I was convinced it would not be difficult for Albert to conquer
him," Asmanu, a former Berlin-based diplomat, said.
Asmanu believes Papilaya will be able to defeat his next
opponent, Poland's Borrowski, whom he believed was no better than
Borbachev.
Earlier, Indonesian light flyweight Hermensen Ballo and
flyweight Rachman Kili Kili were bumped off by their opponents.
